I dropped off my e90 to my mechanic this morning to have a hitch and trailer wiring installed.

He just called to tell me that none of the rear lights work, and the windows won’t roll up or down. There may be more symptoms that he didn’t list. This could be a major headache. Especially because he seems to think that I need to take it to BMW to figure it out. And I have a feeling he’s not going to foot the bill for that. I’m really hoping they’ll figure it out.

I should have just forked over the cash, and waited for a OEM BMW wiring harness to show up, but he was very confident that they could do without it.

I’m hoping it’s just a blown fuse or something silly like that. Not a fried BMC which is what he seems to think it is.

EDIT: They called back. Turns out I misunderstood and they hadn’t even begun installing the wiring harness. They just disconnect the battery, and then had all these problems

My first guess was going to be one or more bad fuses.

I have no electrical/wiring experience but I pulled out my dash and had similar issues once. Turns out I removed a ground to an aftermarket security system that was incorrectly removed.

I’m thinking a ground issue but honestly, I have no idea.

Is the harness he is using powered from the bulbs or does it just take signal from the bulbs but is powered by dedicated power from the batter or a nearby cigarette socket? https://www.etrailer.com/search/Powered+Trailer+Light+Converter

If the bulbs are tied into the CAN bus then he might have caused some issues.

Tell em to reconnect the battery and your power windows will be able to move and your rear lights will magically light.

The lights don’t work with the battery disconnected?

Typical German terrible build quality..........

Have them double and triple check the quality of the battery post connection. Make sure you are getting full voltage. Also, you could hook up a trickle charger. See if the functionality comes back. What you described could be attributed to low voltage, which could be from a bad ground, bad power or both connections to battery.

Just think, a BMW dealer would charge $275 to look at it

They probably f’d up and cooked the LCM. There are no fuses for the lights, in the conventional sense one might expect. Now why the windows don’t work? Because they really f’d up. Probably.

They're also lying through their teeth. Find a new shop.

Wait for the wiring harness. Don't start hacking wires.
